Interview - Vetma

VETMA x NUBES

February 17, 2025 — 5 min read

PREFACE :

For this second interview, I absolutely wanted to do it with someone I know and see a lot of potential in. Nubes is still a small brand, but each of its pieces has managed to captivate me (and its audience) both through its aesthetics and the atmosphere it creates.

For the biggest supporters of the media, you’ve probably noticed that this brand was featured in my magazine Vetma: Éphéméride Pt. 2, in the Rookie of the Year section. Unfortunately, two pages weren’t enough to properly talk about the brand.

I’m really excited for you to discover who Nicolas is, his beginnings, and his ambitions he’s one of the most generous people I’ve met in this industry. So, here is Vetma’s second interview.

INTERVIEW :

Can you introduce yourself and tell us a bit about Nubes ?

My name is Nicolas, I'm 25 years old. If I had to describe myself briefly, I’d say I’m extremely passionate when something interests me, I dive into it completely. That’s the case for fashion, but also music, football, and even the NBA. Since I can’t sing, and I’m neither a football nor basketball prodigy, I chose clothing instead by creating Nubes in 2020, haha!

What motivated you to launch your brand ?

Can we get a little personal? The reality is that I lost my father when I was 9 years old. What followed were complicated years with a problematic stepfather, which led to a rocky academic journey. I never really did something I truly loved. In 2019, I felt the need to escape on my own, so I left for two months in Greece for a humanitarian trip. I was able to breathe, see new horizons, and reflect on what I really wanted to do with my life. That’s when it clicked I wanted to start something in fashion. When I came back, I launched Nubes as a self-taught designer, thanks to videos from pioneers in France like Flub and Sambarnes.

Description

Where does the name "Nubes" come from, and what does it represent for you ?

Nubes means "clouds" in Latin (and in Spanish). The choice was instinctive, tied to my reflection on the future and the idea of holding onto one’s dreams. Last summer, we created a video project called "The man that wanted to touch the sky", which perfectly illustrates the perseverance that every person wearing Nubes should have.

Description

What is the main concept or identity behind Nubes ?

The identity of Nubes is a dreamlike universe. Beyond clothing, I place a huge emphasis on high-quality photo and video content. In 2025, I’d love to create more video productions to spread the message in different ways, both in France and internationally.

Can you walk us through the process of creating a Nubes collection, from the initial idea to the final product?

First, whenever I get an idea, I write it down immediately because I have trouble focusing. Then, I create a vector design on Illustrator—most of the time, I have a pretty clear vision of the design, and it's very instinctive. But perfecting it can take days or even weeks, especially if I need specific visuals and have to call Alexcreq, my friend who helps me with the graphic design aspect. After that, I work on sourcing materials with the factory, selecting the right fabric and finalizing technical details. A prototype is launched and refined until it’s perfect—things like sizing or fabric might be adjusted throughout multiple samples. Also, new ideas can pop up along the way and be integrated into the piece. Once all of that is done, I finalize the technical file to launch production. Since I’m running the project solo, I also take care of organization, communication, and logistics.

Description

If you could give just one piece of advice to someone who wants to start in fashion, what would it be ?

Just do it. Simply go for it. Practice, fail, improve. And most importantly, don’t compare yourself to others. Comparison can easily lead to unnecessary demotivation because everyone has their own pace, their own story, and their own path.

Description

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned from creating Nubes ?

The best part has been realizing that this is truly what I want to do for the rest of my life. I’ve found my path, and I feel more and more comfortable in it. Also, meeting other creators has been incredibly enriching the emerging French brand scene is truly healthy and supportive.

Description

Is there an artist or designer who influences your work ?

I don’t really draw inspiration from a single designer, but rather from different eras of my life. I’ve gone from being into Supreme’s hype culture to something completely different, like the archives of CDG, Margiela, Alyx, and Namesake. My goal is to mix all of that while staying coherent with Nubes’ creative direction. If I had to name one designer I’m really into right now, it would be Edmond Luu, the Creative Director of the French brand "Pièces Uniques"!

Thank you so much for this interview! I’m really excited to see where your journey takes you next. You’ve already shown me a few upcoming pieces, and they’re looking pretty amazing!
